Under 9 whites continue impressive start to the season.

Didcot Town under 9 whites continued their great start to the season with another impressive performance at Headington on Saturday.

With Riley Hartnett sadly missing the game through illness, it was left to the other 12 whites warriors to roll up their sleeves and battle for the red and white army.

Once again, game time was shared amongst all 12 players in the first and second game.

A tense first half saw Didcot have plenty of possession and a succession of corner kicks but they could not break the deadlock.

Theo Blaszko scored Didcot’s first goal in the second half. The recent signing from Cholsey scored with a cool finish in a crowded area.

Jude Chaffey was then somehow denied a second goal when his superb strike from the edge of the area came back off both crossbar and post and bounced on the line.

Headington equalised when the home side got in behind the Didcot defence and their striker poked the ball home past Seb Bonventre in the Didcot goal.

The impressive Leon McCalium then scored his first goal of the season for Didcot in great style.

McCalium smashed home a free kick (pictured) from distance.

There was still time for another goal in the first game when Jacob Williams pounced and he went round the goalkeeper to score from close range.

The boys then picked the team for the second game. I have recently brought this into the team and the boys absolutely love it. They all sit together picking the team for each half and their positions. There is plenty of rotation of positions by the boys and formations.

It is great to see these young 8-year-old boys thinking about what they are doing ahead of the game and one of them will then explain the positions and formation.

In the game, Josh Worthington joined Leon by scoring his first goal of the season. Despite us being very early in the season, ten of the thirteen players have already scored this season showing what a great little squad we have.

Josh saw his shot from the edge of the area hit the underside of the crossbar and drop down close to the line and as we all looked across for the Russian linesman, the referee awarded the goal.

Headington cancelled the goal out in the first half in a much-shortened game to bring to an end two good games played in great spirit.

The man of the matches were awarded to Leon and Josh but once again, they were very difficult decisions with all the boys playing so well. Leon reminds me of a young Stuart Pearce. His no nonsense style of football and he has a powerful left foot. A great defensive display and a superb free kick saw him deservedly take the award for the first game.

Josh took the award in the second game. Josh scored a great goal and his desire to win the ball as well as some great passing saw him take home the trophy for the week.

The boys are on the road again next week when they travel to Oxford Blackbirds.
